How To Write An Authorization Letter

An authorization letter is written to allow somebody to do something. The letter is usually written by a high-ranking official, such as a court official, a boss, a teacher and the like. The authorisation can be given for any matter, ranging from authorizing bail to a convict to authorizing students to avail leave on certain dates. Since the letter is written by a high-ranking official, it has to maintain a formal tone throughout.

Hence it is better to organize the letter into three sections, namely the introduction, the main body and a conclusion. The introduction will generally introduce who you are and whom you are authorizing and what you are authorizing them to do. In the main body, including details, such as why you are authorizing the particular deed and also mention any reservations that you might have about the whole thing. Finally, conclude it by giving necessary details such as your emergency contact number and other details.

Sample Letter

The following is a sample of an authorization letter.

Albus Dumbledore,

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Minerva McGonagall,

Head of Gryffindor,

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Subject: Authorisation for Harry Potter

Dear Minerva,

I hope this letter finds you in the best of spirits.

As I understand it, Mr. Potter had expressed a desire to stay back at the school during the month of December. I understand that the entire school is non-functional then, however, considering the special case of Mr. Potter, I am ready to make an exception.  As Headmaster of Hogwarts, I authorize Mr. Harry Potter to stay back in the school during the winter.

I am sure that you are aware of the peculiar situation that the wizarding world finds itself it now. It is not only highly charged and extremely dangerous for a wizard like Harry to be out in the muggle world without the necessary supervision, but it is also extremely unwanted. At these times, we have to be very careful. In addition to this, you might be acquainted¬†with Mr. Potter’s relation to his extended family. His accounts of their treatment towards him are startling. However, we cannot do much to interfere in their private matters. What we could do, is, however, provide him with an authorisation to stay back here and take up an extra course if he wishes to.

With this letter, you will find a handwritten document with my signature to be sent to Mr. Potter’s relatives. Please do add a paragraph or two on your behalf as well.

Yours Sincerely,

Albus Dumbledore,
