Condolence Letter, Sample & Format

Introduction :

A condolence letter can be formal or informal depending on the setting. If it is a business condolence letter, it should be kept formal whereas a non-business related condolence letter can be informal to give good words of comfort to the grieving party more openly, such as with family and friends. People often need words of their near and dear ones when their beloved passes away. However, it is necessary to choose words very carefully while writing such a letter.

A condolence letter can be both formal or informal depending upon the relationship the person has with the receiver. If it is informal, put in your emotions and console the person by using the best words you can. Encourage them to be strong in such a situation and tell them that you are with them no matter what. And also mention, that you would soon be meeting them. People want their near ones around though they might not say it.

Dear Martha,

Subject: Extending our Condolences

It is with deep sadness that I am writing this letter on hearing the passing away of your beloved husband, Fred. I was away on a company trip when I heard the news of his demise. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on behalf of my family and myself.

If it is convenient to you, I would like to drop in on you sometime this month. It has been a couple of years since we last met; I remembered how vibrant Fred was at our last luncheon. It is indeed such sad news to hear of his sudden demise. I couldn’t believe it at first when I heard of it. He was someone everyone loved to be around; I realize how much saddened everyone would be in your family. But life has to move on.

If there is anything that I can do for you in this time of grief, please do not hesitate to call on me. We have been good buddies for ten years, and I am here for you. I hope I can be of some use to you at this time.

My family and I wish you peace and hope during this time of loss. May God bless Fred’s soul. My prayers are with you and your family.  May God give you all the strength.

Your good friend,

Dolly Simpsons
