Introduction

A hiring freeze is a corporate term. A hiring freeze is undertaken by a company or organization that wishes to put a cap on the number of employees it is hiring for the time being. This hiring freeze announcement may be for long term or short term; it varies from situation to situation.

What greatly influences a recruitment freeze though, is the economic conditions in which the firm is functioning. The aim of this freeze to control human capital loss. Sometimes it can be due to simple reasons as well and not always for catastrophes such as lack of financial resources. The company might have enough members on board and therefore announces a freeze, and there is not any requirement of additional employees. However, these letters are extremely serious and therefore should follow a formal tone. It needs to be short, precise and concise altogether. Refer to the sample letter given below.

Subject: Announcement of hiring freeze

To The Human Resource Department

After the recent announcement of demonetization in India by the Modi Government, the board of directors has together decided to impose a hiring freeze on the company right now.

With the banning of 500 and 1000 rupee notes, the banks are swamped at present. In addition to that, the company also has to file its internal income tax reports for the fourth quarter. And that is just the domestic situation right now.

Our primary partners in Benin have also recently updated us with the economic conditions in Benin. Their currency has hit an all time low, showing a 34% drop in the US dollar.

Given the prevailing economic conditions both at home and abroad we do not have the financial capacity to hire more employees at the moment. So for any pending applications, I would request you to send them an apology and informing them the reason for the same.

I would also request the concerned person to update the career portals with the same information.  Just a simple line which says “UC is not hiring currently.”

We can not say for how long the freeze will last. But for at least the remaining part of the year, I would request you to delegate all extra work accordingly to our employees and come up with a compensation plan for employees in kind. I would like to discuss the details of this plan by Monday.
